One in eight

25 04 2008

I’m currently reading a wonderfully grim book called The Portable Obituary: How The Famous, Rich, and Powerful Really Died, by Michael Largo.

The book is full of interesting and gruesome facts. For example:

On Thanksgiving, 13 percent of all home-cooked turkeys are left to defrost improperly and become contaminated with salmonella, causing 1.3 million illnesses and an additional 500 deaths a year.

13 percent: that’s a little over one in eight turkeys. Wow.
