Dystopia

14 05 2010

The condominiums at the south end of Spadina Avenue scare me.

The ones on the east side look like some giant race of alien beings that have arrived to conquer the Earth:

We come in peace. (Shoot to kill, shoot to kill, shoot to kill.)

The condos on the west side are dark and drab and depressing:

I know that these buildings are close to the lake, close to the sports stadiums and close to downtown, but I can’t help but think that that block will turn into a slum within my lifetime.

To commemorate that spring is back in the air, the Song Of The Day is “Poisoning Pigeons In The Park” by Tom Lehrer, which includes these wonderful lyrics:

All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon,
When we’re poisoning pigeons in the park.
Ev’ry Sunday you’ll see
My sweetheart and me,
As we poison the pigeons in the park.

When they see us coming, the birdies all try an’ hide,
But they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide.
The sun’s shining bright,
Ev’rything seems all right,
When we’re poisoning pigeons in the park.
