It’s that time again

As you probably know, we’re about to have another federal election in Canada. While I will undoubtedly rant about Canadian politics many times between now and the scheduled polling date in early May (hint: I am not a fan of Stephen Harper), I just wanted to mention two cool politics-related things that you might enjoy.

The first is one of the most famous political attack ads of all time, created for the Lyndon Johnson presidential campaign of 1964:

The second is a Twitter account called “InfoAlerteBot”, which bills itself as “a self-aware artificial intelligence devoted to providing timely and accurate information to the humanoid members of the Conservative Party”. Being a bot, it only tweets in capital letters. Some recent samples of the bot’s work:

OUR PLATFORM: WE DID A LOT OF GOOD THINGS, AND DIDN’T LOWER TAXES. THE COALITION WILL DO BAD THINGS, AND RAISE TAXES. WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED?

ANNOYED YET? THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE CONSTANT DELUGE OF POLLS IS TO ELECT A CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT.

REPORTS OF ODD WHIRLING AND GYRATION NOISES COMING FROM JOHN DIEFENBAKER’S GRAVE SITE ARE CATEGORICALLY FALSE

And so on. The Twitter feed for this bot is here.

I can never get enough of watching old videos from the 1960s on YouTube, so here are some more. Here’s the Beau Brummels – a band from San Francisco who sounded like they were from England – with “Laugh Laugh”, performed on Shindig in 1965:

I love the Muppet-like stage moves. (The full-length version of this is here.) Next, there’s The Association performing “Along Comes Mary”, which charted in 1966, on the Smothers Brothers show:

They get bonus points for the recorder solo. Finally, a poor quality video of the Strawberry Alarm Clock’s “Incense and Peppermints”, from 1967, which I included because it is simply awesome:

“Strawberry Alarm Clock” is such a great 1960s name for a band. It’s not as great as “The Peanut Butter Conspiracy” (which actually existed), but it’s pretty great.

Off in search of that bot. Might need it to scare some left-wing friends.

Thanks!
