Blue Jays 2011: Kelly Johnson

16 12 2011

I think I’ve figured out the problem – it’s his name. In this part of the world, “Kelly” is usually a girl’s name, so the natural instinct is to think that Kelly Johnson lacks toughness or something. Recall that the only other Kelly to play for the Jays was Kelly Gruber – and people (rightly or wrongly) questioned his intestinal fortitude at times.

Kelly Johnson would have been better off if his parents had named him, say, Doug. “Doug Johnson” sounds like the sort of person who would chew tobacco and hang in tough on the double play. “Kelly Johnson” sounds like a quiche eater.

But it could have been a lot worse – his parents could have named him Howard.
