“Decades” by Joy Division

3 06 2013

I usually can’t listen to Joy Division’s Closer album. Perhaps it’s because I am aware that lead singer Ian Curtis hanged himself shortly after this album was completed in 1980, but I find that listening to this normally puts me in a gloomy, existential head space that isn’t healthy to live in.

But, sometimes, when I’ve felt isolated or lonely, or when the world just seemed too much to bear, these songs have brought me a strange kind of comfort, like sunshine on a cold morning in January.

There’s a biopic of Joy Division that was filmed in 2007 that explores the origins of the band – it’s pretty good. While I’m not as much of a fan of Joy Division as some people I know – some of them think that they were the best band ever, period – I liked them enough that once, when I was in England on holiday, I took a trip to Manchester just to say I’d been where they recorded their music.
