“Redemption Song” by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros

15 06 2013

I posted the Maytals’ “Redemption Song” a few days ago, so I should post this one too. It’s Joe Strummer covering Bob Marley and the Wailers. The video was created shortly after his tragically early death. (It’s hard to believe that he has been gone over 10 years now.)

This video holds a special place in my heart.

What struck me about Joe Strummer was that he was one of the few Caucasians who could do good versions of reggae songs. I think it’s because he wasn’t self-conscious about the racial divide – he loved the music, so he wanted to play and sing it. And it’s his love of the music that shines through here.
