“Little Honda” by The Hondells

19 06 2013

I love watching videos from the 1960s and 1970s on YouTube. Their video collections include footage from Shindig!, which was a music show that ran on ABC from 1964 to 1966. This is right when all of the original British Invasion bands first reached America, so there is lots of priceless footage.

Here’s one of my favourite Shindig! excerpts – The Hondells miming to their hit “Little Honda” (which was written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love of the Beach Boys).

Warning: the passengers on these vehicles are engaged in unsafe riding practices. Do not try this at home.

Like many 1960s bands that had a hit on the charts, The Hondells weren’t really a band at first – they were singer Chuck Girard and a bunch of studio musicians. When the song became successful, a band was recruited and given a name. The Hondells lasted for a little while after that before disappearing; according to Wikipedia, Girard went on to become a Christian recording artist.
