“5 American, 6 Canadian” by Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet

30 07 2013

Here’s a band that I saw at the Hillside Music Festival near Guelph on Sunday. They didn’t play this song, but I like it, so I’m posting it. It’s my site; I get to do that.

Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet are from Toronto, and formed in 1984. They are best known for composing “Having An Average Weekend”, which was used as the theme song for the TV show The Kids In The Hall. The band’s original incarnation disbanded in 1996, but they reformed in 2012 with new bass player Dallas Good (their original bassist, Reid Diamond, died of cancer in 2001).

While many people think of them as a surf band, they don’t think of themselves this way: they once recorded a song titled “We’re Not A Fucking Surf Band”. So there. For what it’s worth, I think they’re more of an eccentric urban lounge band than a surf band.
